Abstract

This research looked at the African Union and conflict resolution in Africa with reference to Nigeria. Specifically, the study aimed to show the role African Union has played in resolving conflict as related terrorism in Nigeria and the factors that posed a challenge to African Union towards resolving conflict in Nigeria. Data were gathered through secondary sources and analysis done qualitatively. Based on the analysis, it revealed that African Union has played notable roles in resolving conflicts in Nigeria mainly in area of tackling terrorism. This is evident through formation and funding of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), rendering of technical assistance and involvement of humanitarian activities. Furthermore, it revealed that issue of funding, complexity of conflict, problem of political will and the challenge of identifying the sources of financing terrorism and other violent related activities are major challenge to the African Union in conflict resolution in Nigeria. It was recommended that there is need to adequate provision of fund for conflict resolution, identification and blocking the sources of financing of terrorist or violent group activities, adequate political will and commitment. Also, there is need for inclusive dialogue, mediation and facilitation and effective collaboration between AU and Nigeria and other international organizations etc.
